1 August 2026 – 31 January 2027
(semester 26B)

InformationThe HARPS3 Open-Time Programme | Announcement of Opportunity
Proposal information
Principal investigator
One single word in both cases, e.g. 'James Smith' or 'María-Jesús Pérez-García'.
Forename:
Surname:
E-mail If more than one email, separate with commas.

Type again:
Affiliation   Your primary affiliation, e.g. 'University of Bristol (UK)', 'University of Amsterdam (NL)'.
Time Allocation Committee   The proposal will be sent to the following time-allocation committee for assessment:

NL PC (The Netherlands) ING PATT (United Kingdom)

Co-investigators Please separate by commas, e.g. 'John Maxwell (Leicester University), Pedro Hernandez (IAC)'.
Title
HARPS3 consortium proposal? Answer 'Yes' below if the PI is a member of the Terra Hunting Experiment consortium.

Yes No

Scheduling mode   Check below the required scheduling mode (you will be able to provide more details at phase 2).

Flexible Phased observations Monitoring observations

Summary
Please state here the overarching goals of your proposal, the relevance to the broader scientific field and the immediate science objectives of the proposal. Text should contain no more than 200 words.
Scientific and technical information
For additional information, or advice about e.g. observing strategy, or about observations with unusual scheduling requirements, see the HARPS3 Open-Time Programme page, or contact harps3_open_time_supporting.iac.es.

Not currently offered

  • Spectropolarimetry.
  • The reduced data is not flux calibrated. Include observing a flux standard in your list of targets if you require flux calibration.
More detailed infomation, required to construct the HARPS3 observing groups (aka observing blocks) will be sought in phase 2.
File upload
Upload a PDF file extending no more than four pages (figures, captions and references included) and comprising two sections to justify the scientific case and the observations requested. Maximum file size is 3M. In observations requested, mention specifically what feature(s) you want to measure and how. Justify what signal-to-noise is necessary and the estimated integration time to realise this, along with the required limits of airmass, FWHM and sky brightness. Justify the observing setup choice.

Upload:

Instrument setup
Observing Mode Spectroscopy at R ~ 115,000 over the wavelength range ~ 3800 - 6900 Å.
Targets
Targets
Provide summary information about the targets to be observed. Use object visibility, sexagesimal to degree coordinate convertor, HARPS3 Exposure Time Calculator. Use the format below for which examples are provided.

Target RA_J2000(deg) Dec_J2000(deg) Band=Mag Exposure_time(s) Max_FWHM(arcsec) Max_airmass

HD166 1.65519890459 29.02071363055 G=5.878 1200 1.2 1.3
HD137010 231.08962519831 -19.74045805625 G=9.706 3600 1.1 1.8

Requested time
Total observing time, including overheads: seconds (use HARPS3 Total Observing Time Estimator).

Specify sky brightness: Any Dark/Grey Dark

Typical sky brightness for dark, grey and bright conditions (FLI=fractional moon illumination):
Dark. V > 20.9 mag/arcsec2 (moon below horizon or FLI < 0.25).
Grey. 19.8 < V < 20.9 mag/arcsec2 (0.25 < FLI < 0.65)
Bright. V < 19.8 mag/arcsec2 (FLI > 0.65)
